According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of surface transmission of COVID-19 appears to be low. Airborne transmission is way more significant and those who constantly disinfect surfaces may be doing more harm than good.
The US CDC noted that the risk of surface transmission was low, and was secondary to the primary routes of transmission through direct contact droplets and aerosols, said Vincent Hill, Chief of the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch. Hill added that the risk of transmission from touching a surface, though low, is increased indoors. On the contrary, outdoors, the sun and some other factors may destroy viruses. Hill further stated that in most conditions, cleaning the surfaces using soap or detergent, and not disinfecting, would be enough to decrease the already low risk of virus transmission through surfaces. Additionally, disinfecting surfaces was not particularly necessary unless a sick person or someone positive for COVID-19 has been in the household within the previous 24 hours… (CNN, April 20, 2021)
